13?.11.11 along w.16th

On the way to the vancomiccon in November, we encountered a cute cat sitting on a chair under a tree. As I tried to take a picture, it jumped right off the chair and came in for a close up in less than two seconds. Then it chased a squirrel. Haven't seen it since. I hope it didn't catch rabies.

11.11 weekend of van comic jam

Just a recap post. It's of the weekend my sis came out to geek out on the beautiful works of Jim Mahfood and Dave Crosland. Good times.

I live the real life "Community".

Or at least it seems like I do.

Now, as I was saying, I think I am Jeff. I first identified with him when I decided to go back to college (sorry, I mean "a polytechnic university"). Then I said to myself "Haha, it's so funny that I'm so old and back in school." I know there are "mature" students in schools all over the world, so don't think that I'm hating. And school is fun to some extent, challenging to other extents and downright annoying for any extents left over. It's a path I chose and I am happy about it. Mostly.

I should have seen the signs of my school actually being the reality of Greendale Community College in my first semester. Every day, I would pass by an office that had a huge sombrero hanging on the wall that made me think of Senor Chang's office. I didn't dare look to see if there were any tigers. I took a class on comic books. Not really anything I can directly relate to Community, but I don't know ANY other school that had offered that back when I took courses the first time around (P.S. I loved that class). I was also easily one of the oldest students in my class. In one class, I'm pretty sure one of my profs was my age or younger. Despite these small signs, I went through my classes smoothly.

The reality of this tv show hit me today. I am taking a class that I will call the Carpe Diem class. It doesn't really focus on seizing the day, but it absolutely reminds me of that class in the episode titled "An Introduction to Film". Remember, I do not hate learning. I do not hate school. I do not hate education. But this class caught me waaaay of guard.

We started the class by listening to our breath, paying attention to when our breath stops in between the exhale and the inhale. Then we tried to focus on the spot between our thoughts when our thoughts change from one thing to something else. We meditated. Normal, right? Then, we rolled around the classroom on our chairs. There are 50 or so of us. Less normal? Then we rearranged our chairs into a huge circle where we were to introduce ourselves then make a gesture or sound that represents us. So...

Yeah, one guy in my class reminds me of the hacky sacking, green tea loving, small nippled (ex)boyfriend of Britta. I don't know his name, but his gesture was this wacky dance. It lasted about 5 seconds.

It sort of looks like the dance move at about 3:38 of this clip, minus the hand behind the head.

I am not joking.

Another student, a woman, made that sort of monkey shrill you'd hear in a film panning over a jungle landscape. I don't remember her name either. No, I will not post a sound clip... you can look for monkey cries yourself.

The best part of class is the Tai Chi that we end it with. We were taught how to "part the wild horse's mane" today. Our homework? Teach that move to our mother.

Again, I am not joking.

I do appreciate this class, but I am honestly intimidated. If you are my friend, please let me know that I'll be ok. And that I am not on the bizzaro real life version of Community.

Today's your last chance!

Those Crazy Dogs are deeelicious. Pepperoni AND perogies on a hotdog?! Im in heaven.

These are my favourite sand sculptures. Particularly the bubbles!

AAAND I finally won a Domokun! It was at the basketball hoops, if you're asking, and I actually won 2 and a minion!

My little domo is posing at the highlight of the PNE (minus the concerts): the Peking Acrobats. See them. SO awesome.

29.08.11 ride a horsie at the PNE!

I wish I could ride a majestic Clydesdale. But as you can see, they were getting groomed. Even that blue one. Hey, wait a sec...

Instead I got to ride a plush pony! That sucker is $599! AND it comes in the form of a zebra or a unicorn!! I KNOW. SO AWESOME.

28.08.11 my day was an LOL!

I had a BBQ this weekend with the meat my friend Lawrence and I won in a meat raffle. It was deeeelicious! Props out to the peeps supporting the Lymphoma Association who threw the raffle and to Save on Meats who provided the most delicious $50 worth of meat that a $5 bill could buy!
I went to the Richmond Night Market and found a really small hat. I was like that character from In Living Color's skit Men on Film. Two snaps up with a twist!
Also at the Night Market, I drank the largest lemonade ever. It was as large as my forearm. Save the cup in case you need to bail out a sinking boat or bathe a small child.
So there you have it. Big, little, big. L o L. My LOL day :)

23.08.11 @JColeNC at the vogue!!

P509

Oh good GAWD did this man do it.

Mr. J. Cole, if you're reading this, the last time I saw you, you were on the main stage at Seattle's Bumbershoot Festival last year, opening for Drake and Mary J. and you straight up stole the show. Tonight, you kicked off your world tour in a city that very obviously loves you, and you didn't only kill it tonight, you flogged it to death and kept beating it!!

You are an amazing performer, with great presence and showmanship. And with your album YET to drop?!! The amount of talent you have is unheard of. If I ever muster up the courage to get on stage for hip hop karaoke, I am going to cover one of your songs. And I will try to kill it... or at least maim it real bad.

Good luck with your tour and album. I look forward to your next show in Vancouver.

Sincerely yours,
marion

Why are haters so angry?

My BAD! This wasn't VIA's "do something nice" gig after all (but they really ARE nice, nay, AWESOME). But my sentiments still hold true. I know how to reverse psychologize the happiness out of a hater and, if needed, I WILL.

As read off of @VIAwesome:

An angry blog didn't like the "Do Something Nice" post we made so much they sent us 1,500 visitors. Hate = traffic? :( ow.ly/5PDYI

So I'm sitting on the the train, reading my twitter feed. I come across a post about an angry person (supported by other angry people) who doesn't like random acts of kindness or the "Do something nice" campaign that VancouverIsAwesome.com did (they actually DIDN'T do that... just reported on it).

It's kind of sucky that there are people who take offense to someone else's good mood. They must be the "mind your own damn business" types. I don't get it. I have bad days, sometimes I'd rather not hear what people (especially strangers) have to say. In that case I'd politely ignore them.

What's the fuss? Being outwardly not nice is just as annoying as being outwardly nice, if not worse. "Telling people how to behave is an assertion of ownership; it is disdainful of individual agency, a failure to acknowledge boundaries and autonomy." said the angry blogger. Yup, same goes for telling nice people to NOT be nice.

If you really feel the need to tell someone to shut up, I dare you to do it. There. Happy now? Hahaha so am I! Haters: 0, Niceness: 1.

24.07.11 chilly bike racks

I know these bike racks have been "knit-bombed" or "crochet-bombed" (or "whatever you call it" bombed) for a minute now. I just had the opportunity to take a picture of it now. If you've never seen this and would like to see it in real life, it's along Dunsmuir street by the Sephora and Holt Renfrew side of the Pacific Centre mall.
I really like finding inanimate, stationary things all cozied up with yarn. I wonder how the heck it gets done. Do you get to do that stuff in broad daylight? Or do you need to be all stealth? I can't imagine that it's vandalism if you've knitted a scarf for a metal pole. Anyway, it's cute and smile inducing so thought I'd share.

12.07.11 what WAS it?

P454

Walking to class this morning I encountered what I think used to be a dragon fruit... I think. Looks like it was a hit and run. Right beside the crosswalk and everything. Aren't those things expensive?

10.07.11 something nice

I noticed that I walk along Cambie. A lot. One of these days I'll be super lana about my posts and create separate pages for my flower pictures, my coffee cup pictures, and Cambie street. Until then, enjoy these shots from the Cambie Bridge, including a little poster promoting niceness.

06.07.11 in Chinatown there's dried everything!

I was up "early" today so I decided to accompany my mom to Chinatown. I love that place. I'm sure I've blogged about it one time or another, and this time is no different.

My dad wanted us to find some sort of Szechuan pepper of sorts. Mom just had the wrapper of a certain brand that once contained it, all written in Chinese. We used it to ask "do you have this?". We walked into one of those dried everything stores near Powell street and found what we wanted. Good times.

The man in the picture was the one who helped us out. He insisted that their store's pepper was the best. The store also had a huge wall of medicines, ointments and remedies. Totally awesome. I crave the smell of tiger balm!
